How to Install MUI Language Files in Windows Vista

Multilingual user interface (MUI) language packs in Windows Vista enables users to change the language Windows uses to display text in wizards, dialog boxes, menus, and other items in the user interface. Every Windows Vista system actually run on a display language that installed while setup Windows Vista. To change or switch to other different display languages, additional MUI language packs have to be installed.

Users can download and install additional language packs via Windows Update (only Windows Vista Ultimate and Windows Vista Enterprise editions have license and rights to install more than one copy of MUIs), or if these MUI language pack files already been downloaded on to the computer or on Windows DVD, use the guide below to install the new display language.

How To Install a Multilingual User Interface Pack (MUI)

1. Click on Start Menu, then go to Control Panel.
2. Click on Clock, Language, and Region option (or Regional and Language Options icon in Classic View).

3. Click on Install or uninstall display languages under “Regional and Language Options”. For users on Classic View, click on Keyboards and Languages tab, then click on Install/uninstall languages under “Display language”.

4. Enter administrator password or click on Continue when prompted with User Account Control dialog by Language Pack Installer.
5. In the Language Packs Installation and Uninstallation wizard, click on Install languages.

6. Then type or browse to the folder that contains the language pack files. The language file must be in .CAB extension, typical named as “lp.cab”. Note that you just need to specify the top level folder that contains the language files, regardless of the level of folders nested. Language pack installer will search recursively.

Once selected the folder, the installer will scan the directories and list all languages available to install, together with native name, type (MUI or LIP) and size.
7. Select and tick the check boxes of all languages that want to be installed. (actually, the check boxes are checked by default, so you should untick and uncheck the check boxes of display languages that don’t want to be installed)
8. Click on Next button when ready.
9. Click on radio button for I accept the license terms, then click on Next button.

10. On the summary page on which language(s) will be installed, click on Install button.

11. Wait for the installation to finish, which may take a while. A restore point will firstly be created.

12. Once all selected language files is installed successfully, a confirmation screen will be shown. From here, click on Close button to exit, or check the Change my display language to option, then select a language set from the drop down list, optionally decide whether to apply changes to system accounts (will change the language on Welcome Scree etc.), and then click on Log off to logout and login again to use Windows Vista in new display language.

Note: The Display language section will only be visible if you have already installed a LIP or on Windows Vista Ultimate and Enterprise editions that Windows supports MUI.

Internet Explorer 8 (IE8) is having a rendering issue or scripting error on some web pages that you visit? Now you can contribute to the development of IE web browser, or at least to let your frustration or anger known by someone. Microsoft is providing a Report a Webpage Problem Internet Explorer Add-on which allows the user to submit a report to Microsoft for webpages they believe are having rendering problems, scripting errors, or various other types of problems in IE8.

After installation of the plugin, restart IE 8 web browser. Once installed, the Report a Webpage Problem Internet Explorer Add-on appears as a toolbar button and a Report a Webpage Problem… item on the Tools menu. In order to submit a problematic website to Microsoft, click on the toolbar button or choose the menu item. The add-on ActiveX control will then take a screenshot of the web page currently being viewed, and open a new tab with a report submission form. A scaled down version of the screenshot will be visible at the bottom. User can decide whether or not to include the full-sized screenshot. Choosing No to the “Include Screenshot?” question means no screenshot will be sent. User can also select a category best representing their observed problem, and able to type a 1000 character limit comment in the text field provided.

Additional data included in the report sent to Microsoft including:

* The protocol type (http, res, file, etc.) of the URL being reported.
* The complete URL.
* A numerical value representing the Document mode.

In Windows Vista with IE running in protected mode, user must allow Microsoft Applications Error Reporting to open outside protected mode to continue submission process. The Report a Webpage Problem Internet Explorer 8 Add-On will be available for a limited time after Internet Explorer 8 RTM, and may be removed from Microsoft Download Center at any time.

Report a Webpage Problem Internet Explorer 8 Add-On can be downloaded from Microsoft Download Center, or directly using download link to setup installer: ReportWebpageProblemIEAddonSetup.exe.

Good news for users who can’t successfully passed the WGA (Windows Genuine Advantage) validation requirement. Internet Explorer 7.0 (IE7) now available free for everyone running Windows system, no matter it’s genuine or pirated version. There is no longer Windows Genuine Advantage validation requires during downloading and installation of IE7. Thus, crack for IE7 and direct download link for IE7 setup file is no longer required (although direct download links still applicable if you don’t even want to visit Microsoft website).

IEBlog described the change of heart of Microsoft on free download of IE 7.0 for non-genuine Windows users due to its commitment to help protect the entire Windows ecosystem seriously. However, the fact is probably due to serious threat from alternative web browsers especially by Mozilla FireFox, and Apple Safari latest entry into Windows desktop, which both available for free download.

IE7 features built-in phishing filter, tabbed browsing, QuickTabs, shrink-to-fit printing, easily customizable search box, CSS improvements, expendable via add-ons, and is the only browser with native support Extended Validation SSL Certificates that help prevent online fraud. Since its release, several changes and enhancements have also been made on IE7 for Windows XP:

* The menu bar is now visible by default.
* The Internet Explorer 7 online tour has updated how-to’s. Also, the “first-run” experience includes a new overview.
* Included a new MSI installer that simplifies deployment for IT administrators in enterprises.

Download Internet Explorer 7 for Windows XP and 2003 from Get It Now page. You can also directly download the installer with IE 7 direct download links without visiting Microsoft sites.

How to Slipstream Internet Explorer 8 (IE8) into Windows Server, XP or Vista Installation DVD

Earlier Windows operating system such as Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows Server 2003 and Windows Server 2008 are shipped with Internet Explorer 6 (IE6) or Internet Explorer 7 (IE7) by default. Microsoft has released a newer version of web browser in Internet Explorer series, namely Internet Explorer 8 (IE8). For users, administrators or IT professionals who wish to preinstall Internet Explorer 8 web browser on earlier version of Windows operating system, it’s possible to slipstream IE8 into the OS image.

Microsoft provides a guide to preinstall the Windows Internet Explorer 8 Internet browser, as well as any additional Internet components on earlier operating systems that are supported. Also, the document also provides a list of unattended settings that can be used to automate configuration and deployment of Internet Explorer 8.

How To Slipstream IE8 to Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows Server 2003/2008

1. Install the Windows Automated Installation Kit (Windows AIK) that matches your local computer configuration. The Windows AIK version should not match the image into which you will be slipstreaming Internet Explorer 8.

Note: You cannot use a 64-bit version of the Windows AIK with a Windows Vista x86 image.
2. Copy the Windows Vista installation directory from the DVD (download Windows Vista with SP2 ISO images) to your local computer.
3. Create three temporary folders, using naming conventions that will help you to remember the purpose of each folder. For example:
* C:\Slipstreaming\Mount
* C:\Slipstreaming\Package
* C:\Slipstreaming\Test
4. Download Internet Explorer 8, to the C:\Slipstreaming directory. For example, C:\Slipstreaming\IE9×86en.
5. Open a Command Prompt window, and extract the Microsoft Update Standalone Packages (.msu) file from the Internet Explorer directory, by typing:

/x:

Example:

C:\Slipstreaming\IE8×86en\IE8-WindowsVista-x86-enu.exe /x: C:\Slipstreaming\IE8×86en

Where Path_to_IE80_Setup is the location of your Internet Explorer 8 files and the MSU_File_Location where to store the extracted .msu file.
6. Expand the .msu file by typing:

expand.exe -F:*

Example:

expand.exe C:\Slipstreaming\IE8×86en\IE8.MSU -F:* C:\Slipstreaming\Package

Where MSU_File_Location is the location of your Internet Explorer 8 .msu files, extracted during step 5, and the Package_Location is where to store the expanded package.
7. Mount your Windows Vista image, by using the following command-line text:

imagex.exe /mountrw install.wim

Example:

“C:\Program Files\Windows AIK\Tools\x86\imagex.exe” /mountrw C:\Slipstreaming\VistaSP1×86en\sources\install.wim 4 C:\Slipstreaming\Mount

Where imagex.exe includes the location to the ImageX tool, install.wim includes the location to your installation image, Image_Number is a numerical value for the operating system image, and Mount_Location is the location where you want to store the mounted image.

Important: If you are unsure of your operating system image number, you can type the following text into a Command Prompt window, using an arbitrary high-value number:

imagex.exe /dir C:\VistaRTM\sources\install.wim 20

From the returned information, select your operating system SKU, and then refer to the IMAGE INDEX value. This value is the .
8. At the command prompt, type the following text:

pkgmgr.exe /n:\WindowsVista-KB#-NEUTRAL.xml /o:”;\windows” /s: /l:

Example:

“C:\Program Files\Windows AIK\Tools\x86\Servicing\pkgmgr.exe” /n:”C:\Slipstreaming\Package\Windows6.0-KB944036-x86.xml” /o:”"C:\Slipstreaming\Mount”;”C:\Slipstreaming\Mount\windows”" /s:”C:\Slipstreaming\Test” /l:”C:\Slipstreaming\slp.log”

Where pkgmgr.exe includes the location to the Package Manager tool. Package_Location is the location to your Package folder, Mount_Location is the location to your Mount folder, and Test_Location is the location to your Test folder, all created in step 3. Finally, the Log_File_Location is the location where you want to store the generated log file.
9. At the completion of the slipstreaming process, verify that the log file states, “exit code 0×00”
10. At the command prompt, type the following text to save your changes:

imagex /commit /unmount

Example:

“C:\Program Files\Windows AIK\Tools\x86\imagex.exe” /commit /unmount C:\Slipstreaming\Mount

Where Mount_Location is the location of the Mount folder you created in step 3.
11. Configure your Internet Explorer 8 installation as part of your installation image by creating and using an answer.xml file and performing an unattended installation.

After slipstreamed, the Windows operating system image can be re-compiled into ISO and burnt to DVD disc. Users who wish to study more about the unattended settings possible to deploy IE8 can download the file directly from Microsoft – SlipstreamUnattend_ITPro.pdf or SlipstreamUnattend_ITPro.xps.

Nokia Plans to Harvest Electromagnetic Wave to Electricity

There are various ways that can be used to generate electricity to power up mobile device but the recent announcement from Nokia may open up your mind. The Nokia Research Centre located in Cambridge, UK is designing a new prototype that is able to convert ambient electromagnetic radiation from phone antenna, or other RF wave source to electricity so that the mobile device can be continuously powered up for longer talk time without the need of recharging.

The mechanism behind is quite similar to what being deployed by current RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) but its usage has been expanded to more interesting application. Besides its own generated electromagnetic wave, the device can detect any other radiation sources such as WiFi devices, cordless phones in surrounding area for more effective power conversion. Currently, the prototype is claimed to be able to convert 3 to 5 miliwatts of electricity. Although it is still far from 50 miliwatts target required to sustain the mobile device in normal operation, but the brilliant concept is definitely a good start to trigger more development improvements as part of the efforts towards greener environment besides bringing convenience to end users.

While there are some technology obstacles that need to be tackled, the Finland based company is confident that the next generation energy harvesting technology should reach market space by three to four years time from now.

Babyglow to Detect Fever in Baby

First time parents are naturally more anxious and worried about their baby as they do not have the experience of having brought up a child previously. It is particularly worrying when a child gets sick as a fever, for instance, could lead to brain damage if not detected and the temperature brought down. The indispensable household thermometer aside, Chris Ebejer has come up with a line of baby clothing that changes color according to a baby’s body temperature. This should reassure parents who want to keep a watchful eye on the feverish baby but fear that they may not do enough due to exhaustion or lapse of attention.

Babyglow clothing comes in blue, pink, and pastel green colors. The original color will turn white whenever the baby’s temperature rises past 37 degrees Celsius. Ebejer spent £700,000 to research and develop the revolutionary pigments which have been embedded into the fabric of Babyglow. Though Ebejer claims that the clothing could save lives, first time parents should consider it as an additional or supplementary tool in monitoring their child’s temperature rather than the main device.

ARM Cortex-A9 Potentially Power Up Next Generation High End Smartphones

While Intel continues to push its X86 architecture
processors for mobile computing, ARM is also keep on upgrading its ARM architecture by integrating multi-core while further shrinking its die size with smaller process technology. According to reliable source, ARM is already planning to migrate to 45nm process technology so that it can integrate multi cores technology, in an attempt to boost up overall performance without affecting the physical foot print and more importantly its power consumption which is crucial for battery life time.

The next generation ARM core product will be mainly targeted for high end smart phone mobile devices where multitasking and graphics performance are important. With the introduction of ARM cortex A9 as the successor of current cortex A8 which has been designed widely including the recently announced Apple’s 3Gs as well as Palm Pre, consumers can expect even better performance boost with its out of order execution while allowing multi-threading technology for scalable performance to handle tasks processing simultaneously.

No exact time line of when this will be available, ARM forecasts that it should reach the market by mid of next year. TI (Texas Instrument) is one of the potential candidates that will leverage on ARM cortex A9 for its OMAP4 which supports full HD 1080p decoding capabilities as well as an impressive 20 Megapixel still image capturing for multimedia centric applications

Finally, a way to simultaneously mount all your favorite gadgets in the car

Perhaps your daily commute is so boring that you need three gadgets to keep you entertained on your way to work. Funny, though, that not even the manufacturer of this triple gadget mount could find a third gadget to include in the photo. I might suggest a digital camera in the third slot so you can take photos of yourself while you’re weaving in and out of traffic.

The “Super Universal Car Mount” features “flexible goose-pipe” which allows you to position your devices in landscape or portrait mode. Maybe add a GPS system to the third slot there. Then you’ve got all your bases covered: in-car movie watching, phone calls, and turn-by-turn directions. And don’t forget blocking your field of vision with what looks like a giant candleabra hanging from your windshield.

Available at USBfever.com for thirty bucks, plus the cost of the ticket(s) you get for any laws you might be breaking while driving.

The iPhone 3G S has landed

Yes, the major media figure on the Internet has an iPhone 3G S. On initial examination, I’d safely say that this if you’re planning on getting an iPhone with a new contract, go ahead. The price is right and the features are great.

Everything on this phone is snappier - Maps especially - and the auto-focus and video uploads passed the wife test who said that this is what she’s been looking for from the iPhone from the beginning. Looks like someone is going to have to upgrade someone.

Overall, this is a good, evolutionary upgrade. As we said at WWDC, this is about getting the iPhone up to speed and making it the de facto way to share video. The Pre is dead in the water compared to this release. I’m sorry. Video will be the next killer app and look for YouTube to groan under the weight of new videos and users.

One other great feature is the compass. This doesn’t make sense at first but if you’ve ever tried to follow iPhone walking directions in a strange city it makes perfect sense. In Maps, the iPhone shows where you’re headed instead of just a little dot. This added bit of information ensures you don’t walk the wrong way before you even start your trip. I can just imagine tourists - and me - popping up from the subway in New York and consulting their iPhone compass programs like Lewis and Clark in Tevas and cargo shorts.

Interestingly, the trade dress is completely the same. I mean to the point of confusion. Do you have an S? A regular one? I’m going to be digging around and pulling some Kremlinology on this because quiet clearly this means something - they didn’t make it look EXACTLY like the 3G for reasons of economy. Something is up.

Otherwise, we’re going to put this through its paces this weekend and we’ll have a full review after that.

Interesting note: We’re in the car right now and I’m tethered via the iPhone using our magical tethering tricks. They work and this is probably the fastest I’ve seen the MacBook Air load web pages in all the time I’ve had it.

UPDATE - This is hilarious. I have had this Air for months now and the Wi-Fi has sucked consistently. Tethered to 3G it’s as fast as any other laptop when it comes to browsing.

iFixit tears down the 3G S

Here are some comments from iFixIt’s tear down of the 3G S. Theirs also included a girl.

* Thankfully, opening the iPhone 3G S is as simple as the 3G. After
removing two Phillips screws, the two halves of the phone are separated
easily using a suction cup.

* The iPhone is differentiated externally only by a new model number,
A1303. The lettering on the back is now shiny, like the Apple logo.

* The internal physical design is virtually identical to the iPhone 3G.
A random passerby on the street would not know the difference. Heck,
even we were struggling to differentiate the two.

* The new graphics core should drastically improve performance, meaning
Apple’s serious about the handheld gaming market.

* There’s still a “Do not remove” sticker above the logic board.
Naturally, we removed it.

* Nearly all components have been relocated to the front side of the
main PCB, including the Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Flash memory chips.

* The battery is 4.51 Watt-hours, or 1219 mAh. That’s about 6% larger
than the iPhone 3G’s battery. Hopefully the hardware runs more
efficiently, since increased battery life will not come from the battery
itself.

* There is an additional antenna connection near the dock connector.
We’re not sure what for just yet. However, we do love exploring these
teasers… Stay tuned!

* For those who are wondering about the fingerprint-resistant coating on
their iPhone 3G S screen: The oleophobic, or oil-proof, technology
evolved from waterproofing. Oil-proof technology is harder to achieve as
oil has a much lower surface tension than water, so it spreads out
easier and thus is harder to get rid off. MIT’s solution was to create a
coating material which creates a layer of micro fibers, but with a much
larger contact angle between the oil droplets and the fibers.

Some comments on usability of the 3G S:

* Camera quality is much improved from the 3G. Close-up shots were
possible down to about 5 cm, and the brightness adjusted well when
picking a focus area.

* The oleophobic screen does seem to clean slightly easier than the 3G’s
normal screen.

* Google Earth (duration of the spinning load wheel) (over Wi-Fi): 3G
S: 4.9 sec; 3G: 22.2 sec. A bit faster than Apple’s claim of 2X speed
improvement — although we know that one simple test of one application
means little in the real world.

Activision to drop Sony PS3, PSP support?

In an interview with The Times Online, Activision CEO Bobby Kotick made it very clear that if Sony does not lower the price of the PS3 then the games publisher will cease support for the console.

Stating that ROIC was much, much higher on the Nintendo Wii and Microsoft’s Xbox 360 last year. Activision ponied up $500 million last year on royalties to the Japanese company whose gaming division netted a $597 million loss.

“They have to cut the price, because if they don’t, the attach rates [the number of games each console owner buys] are likely to slow. If we are being realistic, we might have to stop supporting Sony.” Ask when and he says: “When we look at 2010 and 2011, we might want to consider if we support the console — and the PSP [portable] too.”

Sony’s new NW series delivers Blu-ray on the cheap

25 years of Lomography means its time to party!

The Lomo LC-A camera, the ur-point-and-shoot that introduced Lomography to the world, is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year. If Lomography is your thing, look for a Lomo party near you. If you don’t see one, why not set one up? And don’t worry if you don’t actually have an LC-A camera! Just buy CameraBag for your trusty iPhone and pretend you have a Lomo with the Lolo filter! LOL!

You too can buy 1,000 zombie PCs for pennies on the dollar!

You know those “have-a-penny/need-a-penny” jars you find at 7-Eleven and whatnot? Here’s a cool way to kill a few hours: go around your town collecting pennies. Then, with said pennies, buy a whole bunch of zombie PCs, then start your own botnet. You’ll be the coolest kid in the neighborhood.

What am I talking about? A California company, Finjan, has put together a report that lists the going rates for zombie PCs. You can buy 1,000 infected PCs for the paltry sum of $100—and cheaper deals aren’t hard to find.(You can buy 1,000 infected PCs in Asia for $5. That’s crazy.)

Why should you care? Well, to be honest, I wouldn’t blame you if you didn’t care too much. Zombie PCs, botnets—let someone else worry about that, right? Sure, that’s one way to look at it, but the fact is, all those garbage PCs running around out there just make surfing the Internet all the more dangerous.

It could be a cheap, gift to give someone, though. “Here, 1,000 zombie PCs. Happy birthday!”

You can buy gold from a vending machine in Germany

You’d usually find the best vending machines in Japan… until now! There are plans to introduce vending machines in Germany that sell gold. That’s right: 100 percent pure gold.

There’s already a prototype machine at the Frankfurt airport. Prices are updated every few minutes, and there’s a 30 percent markup over the regular market price.

How much? You can buy 1g for €30, and 10g for €245.

As you might imagine, you can blame the economic crisis for all of this. As those commercials on TV say, there’s nothing quite like owning gold.

Super Talent’s MasterDrive SX SSDs would go great with an old MacBook Pro

Do you have a MacBook Pro? No, the new one with the gimped SATA transfer, but the one before it. Good, because Super Talent, which just won the prize for least presumptive company name, has a new line of solid state drives, dubbed the MasterDrive SX series, that may interest you guys. Write speeds are rated at up to 200MB/s sequential, not burst. Yes, that’s pretty fast.

The new drives range in size from 64GB to 256GB. And since we’re talking SSD here, expect to pay a small fortune. The mid-range 128GB model, which is rated at 220MB/s read and 200 MB/s write, comes in at $359. Prices for the other two? ::shoulder shrug::

If you have the cash, they’re on Newegg. (Well, only the 128GB one is; presumably the other ones will pop up soon.)
